Solids, Liquids & Gas

Add the diagrams for SOILD, LIQUID & GAS as we watch the video.

How to make honeycomb
Ingredients
Serves: 10
·       1/3 cup (80ml) golden syrup
·       1 cup (220g) caster sugar
·       3 teaspoons bi carb soda

Directions
Preparation:5min  ›  Cook:10min  ›  Ready in:15min
  1. Grease a 20cm square cake tin or slice tray.
  2. In a large saucepan, heat the golden syrup and sugar together, bring to a boil then simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes. Cooking time will vary but test it by dropping a little syrup into water-it should become brittle when ready. Watch it doesn't burn.
  3. Remove saucepan from heat and add the bi carb soda. Quickly mix it in because the mixture will foam up instantly. Pour immediately into the cake tin. Leave at room temperature to set then break into bite size pieces.
What would we need to do to make enough for 30 kids?

Powell's Road Waterway Project

Check it out - Fonterra and the farmers want to work together!

We have been asked to be part of the re-generation of the Powells Road waterway. Read all about it on this link and in this article.

Before:

After:

We would need five teams of data collectors who would work as a team to develop a proposal and presentation for the Council. They would then lead the rest of the class in our action during Term 4. You would need to be good team workers and be able to lead the rest of the class. You would need to prepare the presentation and so would focus on this during writing and inquiry for the remainder of the term.

Who is UP FOR THE CHALLENGE? (Not Kapa Haka people as it clashes)

Team 1: Digging the angles of the stream.
1. Rylan
2. Max W
3. Deklyn
4. Ryan
5. Maddy

Team 2: Checking on stream habitat.
1. Liam
2. Heidi
3. Nate
4. Eliot
5. Sam

Team 3: Planting around the banks of the stream.
1. Toby
2. Fletcher
3. Thomas
4. William
5. Thomas

Team 4: Stream invertebrates - what lives in there!
1. Frida
2. Rohan
3. Sammy
4. Ben
5. Brody

Our Questions and thinkings......
Trial - will it work so other areas can use it.
Purpose - fix the habitat so our creatures will flourish - mahinga kai.
It was dug in the 1800 to drain the swamps but is now an important habitat.

Problem:
no shade, weeds grow and sediment blocks the drain.
Contamination from the farm into the waterway and lake.

Our plan...... proposal for DOC
What are the causes and consequences in our area?
What action can we take and what will be the consequences?

Set up a scale model.... decide on the scale.

Each group plan the things that need to be done for them... on the small copy of the river.
Share with the team & overlay on our large copy.

Writing Stamina Starter.... from Pobble

Story starter!

Have you ever wondered what stars are for? Have you ever wondered why the wind blows?
It’s all for them.
When the world sleeps, they awaken. When we close our eyes, they open theirs. All around us, ever present yet unseen, they exist. Their home is the stars. Earth is their playground. This is their story…
Can you continue the story about these mysterious visitors?

Writing Stamina Starter - from pobble

Story starter!

Since she was young, Kate had known she was different to normal people. It was only now though that her true powers were beginning to be realised.
She was becoming the person she was born to be. It was her destiny…

Writing Stamina Starter... from pobble365.com

“Hmmm. Where shall we go this time?” Jeremy asked his brother.
“How about there!?” replied Max excitedly. “We’ve always talked about going there!”
The brothers both put their fingers on the part of the world they had chosen, and waited for the magic to happen.
“I wonder if it will be as fun as our last trip,” mused Jeremy, as the globe began to glow…

A morning in Kepler

Waiata and roll on the mat:

FIE:
Looking at symbols around us. FIE is all about symbols.

Fitness:
This week the students have chosen 'All-in-tag' for our fitness game. Notice how we are all running around, following the rules and being self managing.

Writing:
See how we are all on task and focussed on our writing. The independent learners have more choice of where they can work but we all need to do our best.

Reading:
We were looking at a comprehension strategy.... to help you understand what you read. Draw a picture in your mind.

FIE - getting started

Our team is beginning to look at the FIE or Feuerstein Instructional Enrichment....

We have started by playing a cool game to help us see and read some of the many symbols we see around us every day.

Kind words fill buckets!

Lewis and Kobe worked together to make this poster. They have learned that saying kind words to people makes them feel good but it also makes us feel good too. I know that they will both remember this as they use kind words around our class.

Awesome work team. :)

How can you be persistent?

One of the focuses for Kepler this term is persistence, and the importance of pushing through when you want to give up on a challenge.

Today we used a Survivor-style challenge to test our powers of persistence.

The students were put into groups and were asked to complete a three-part challenge.

First they had to climb up the pirate net and retrieve 4 coloured bands.
Once they had finished this they moved to a beanbag toss challenge.

Finally, they had to complete a spot-the-difference - the mental part of the challenge. This was the part that really tested them. It was very difficult and required real persistence. They all did remarkably well and every group completed the puzzle.

We hope to use this experience as a touchstone as we work to improve our perserverence through the term and all of 2018.

Are you in the waka?

Our class is like a waka. We are all in it together and everyone has to paddle in the same direction if we want to get anywhere. Here we are making our waka sticks for our faces so we can all get in the waka.

Here  is a photo of our class Treaty, which lists the things that will help us paddle in the same direction. They are on our paddles...

1. Show kindness...

2. Show respect...

3. Do my best...

We will also add a photo of the waka when we are all in it. Check it out the waka on the wall in Kepler Space.
