Kind words fill buckets!

Lewis and Kobe worked together to make this poster. They have learned that saying kind words to people makes them feel good but it also makes us feel good too. I know that they will both remember this as they use kind words around our class.

Awesome work team. :)

How can you be persistent?

One of the focuses for Kepler this term is persistence, and the importance of pushing through when you want to give up on a challenge.

Today we used a Survivor-style challenge to test our powers of persistence.

The students were put into groups and were asked to complete a three-part challenge.

First they had to climb up the pirate net and retrieve 4 coloured bands.
Once they had finished this they moved to a beanbag toss challenge.

Finally, they had to complete a spot-the-difference - the mental part of the challenge. This was the part that really tested them. It was very difficult and required real persistence. They all did remarkably well and every group completed the puzzle.

We hope to use this experience as a touchstone as we work to improve our perserverence through the term and all of 2018.

Are you in the waka?

Our class is like a waka. We are all in it together and everyone has to paddle in the same direction if we want to get anywhere. Here we are making our waka sticks for our faces so we can all get in the waka.

Here  is a photo of our class Treaty, which lists the things that will help us paddle in the same direction. They are on our paddles...

1. Show kindness...

2. Show respect...

3. Do my best...

We will also add a photo of the waka when we are all in it. Check it out the waka on the wall in Kepler Space.

Seesaw blogging tool

Wow - Carol showed us how cool Seesaw is and how we can use it to make recordings, annotate our work and share the cool learning we are doing - as EASY AS PIE!

Check out the post I created and have easily embedded onto our class blog. I can't wait to show you how to do it.

Mindfulness

This week we've started using the 'Smiling Minds' program to think about how we can exercise our brain to make it stronger and healthier. Today we are going to make origami boats to use to help us practise belly breathing - an important skill for mindfulness mediation.

Here are some instructions:

Kepler Swimming

Yippee we swim on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this term and need to remember our togs for those days. If we bring our togs on other days, there might be a free swim during lunchtime.

Here we are practising our stopping and listening at the whistle. If we listen carefully then we can use our learning time more effectively.

In Week 2 we are going to check out our skills and get sorted into learning groups. We are also going to practise what to do for swimming in the Triathlon on Friday.

World of INSPIRATIONAL maths

So, how few squares can you use to cover up the given space? There were lots of different solutions - no-one was wrong. It was all about looking for different ways.

We had to use lots of skills....
  • Check that we knew what to do.
  • Slow down to think about how you will solve the problem, talking with your buddy.
  • Not give up but try a different strategy.

We learned...
1. Everyone has a maths brain.
2. Maths is not about thinking fast but thinking deep.
3. You do maths better if you can talk to someone about it.

Blogging Rules:

These are some rules to keep you safe when on the Internet. Make sure you follow them at school and at home.
They are...
1. Never share personal details - only first name.
2. Keep your password secret.
3. Have an adult supervise when you are on the Internet.
4. Keep it kind.
5. Never arrange to meet people off the Internet, unless your parents are with you.
6. Always tell if you see something you don't like.
