This is a piece written by two boys who are distressed by the way some children are chasing butterflies at school. Let's see if they can convince you that it is a bad idea.
Please DO NOT kill butterflies
Please DO NOT kill butterflies
We think that people should not kill butterflies at school for a fun activity. It is a cruel and unnecessary thing to do. How would you feel if a giant pulled your arms and legs off or decapitated you?
We are really worried about the butterflies because some kids keep them in a sealed container with no air holes. This will decrease the population because the butterflies will die.
I have seen people use their own hats to catch the butterflies and they damage the wings causing the butterfly to hit the ground hard and die. I think this is mean and cruel.
We feel sorry for the butterflies because they deserve a longer life. That's why we think people should not kill butterflies. They should find a kinder game to play at school.

I am very moved by the fact that you both feel so strongly about the plight of the butterfly that you have written this post. Well done, boys! I am curious... You talk about putting a butterfly in a hat damages their wings which then causes them to crash hard to the ground. Why does this happen?
ReplyDeleteHi Claire. Thanks for your comment on our writing.
DeleteAbout what you were asking. The kids at school try to catch butterflies in their hats. They hit the butterfly with the rim of their hat. This damages the wings and makes them fall to the ground and die.

Kia ora Jed and Daniel,
ReplyDeleteIf the kids are targeting only white butterflies, the ones that will breed on and eat my cabbages then I think they should kill them. If the kids are targeting any other coloured butterflies then I think you are correct, kids should leave them alone.
Regards - Barry.
Hi BArry. We hate white butterflies too because they eat our cabbage and cauliflower and other stuff in the School Secret Garden. But the people kill butterflies slow and painfully. If you are going to kill a pest then do it fast not slow.

I totally agree and I think it's awesome how passionately you express yourselves!
ReplyDeleteI was sneaky on the weekend. I thought that this piece was really important because the boys were doing it for a purpose. I thought that some of my teaching friends on Twitter might like to give them a comment. See how many comments they got from other teachers - from all over NZ and the world!
ReplyDeleteYou never know who is reading your posts. Your audience could be anywhere in the whole world! That is why we need to make sure it makes sense and is ready to publish. EDITING is the key in our learning team!
Hello,

Kind Regards,
Mercy
